PLAY TO WIN - META-SKILLS IN HIGH Stakes Poker
On April 15th, 2011, my life fell apart. Black Friday: A day that is forever etched into every player's mind. I logged on that day to see the dark Department of Justice logo. In the midst of my sleep, I noticed that the Feds had taken down FullTilt and PokerStars websites in the midst of an investigation into money laundering and bank fraud.
My stomach dropped. My net worth was half hidden in bureaucratic red tape. I was unsure if I would see the money again. Worse, my entire career was thrown off track overnight.
Yesterday, I was a twentyfour year-old millionaire climbing steadily online poker's Top 20 all-time winners list. I was at my peak: a predator at the top poker's food chains. Today, I was unemployed with a uncertain financial future. The way I lived my life changed forever.
I decided to give up poker and sell my possessions so that I could backpack the world. This was the beginning of the next stage in my learning process.
I was able to reemerge in the poker scene years later, having gotten rid of the black Friday smoke. My ability to take risks had become weaker, but I now knew my hidden strengths. The online tables were populated by a wiser, more resilient me.
It wasn't about playing poker that I realized the most important skill for winning poker.
Your Bets are the Product of Your Life
Poker is a game that can be played for all ages. It's a game of betting: taking calculated decisions under uncertainty, where the potential reward is greater than the associated risk. Poker is far from gambling when it comes to professionals.
While you may not see yourself as a professional poker player, most of us think and act like professionals.
Your life is the outcome of your bets. Although successful bets can build on each other, one wrong bet can ruin your entire life. Our biggest bets are home, spouse, field of study and career. However, we place bets right from the time we wake up in the morning.
Each time we cross the street we place a bet that reaching the other side will have enough utility to avoid being run over by a bus. Even perception is a gamble. What we perceive and hear is our "best guess", a synthesis between top-down sensory signals and top down predictive models. Our bets are so common and subconscious they almost become invisible to us.
