How to play Roulette

Roulette is played on a rotating wheel that has 37 or 38 numbered pockets. Each turn of the wheel sees the ball being launched in opposite directions. These games can either be played in a walk-in casino or online.

Before each turn, bets may be placed on which number of the ball will land. Bets can be placed either on a single number or on multiple combinations that offer different payouts and chances.

EUROPEAN TABLES - Single zero. The European standard table has 37 pockets, with 18 black, 18 red, and 1 green pocket (numbered 0,).

You can bet on any number and get 35/1. If you wager $1 on a number, your payout is $35 plus $1 from your initial stake. That's $36 total.

There are 37 pockets. Only one pocket can win. Your chances of winning are 1/37. On a fair wheel*, for every $37 that you wager, you will get $36 back.

This is illustrated by putting $1 on every number. This will cost you $37. But when the winning number pays out $36 and all others lose, you'll have $1.

The house edge on a European roulette is 1.7%, or $1 per $37 bet. This was Charles De Ville Wells who won a lot of money one night back in 1891. While he didn't actually break any bank, he did make enough money at one of the tables that the owners were able to get more cash from the other casinos. It is likely that he was claiming to have a system. However, he may have been looking at the wheel for long periods of time and noticed a slight imbalance, which caused the numbers to appear more frequently on one side than on the other.

Red/Black, another popular bet, pays out 1/1 (or justs). This means that if you stake $1 on red and any number of red numbers comes up, your winning chances are $1/37. There are 18 red numbers in the total 37. If there was a ZERO hole, the chances would be 18/36 = 1/2. You would win exactly what you lose, so it would be an even betting. However, the ZERO will appear about 1/37 times so neither red nor blue win. This again gives a 2.7% house edge.
