Poker was named the first time it was played in 19th-century America. It is not known exactly how Poker got its name. There are two major theories, however, that more or less combine to make it plausible. The first theory suggests that Poker got its name from a French card game, which resembled Poker in some way.

Another German game similar to Poker was "Pochspiel", a German card-game that is very similar to Poker. Its name is derived from the German word "pochen", which is also where the French name "Poque” came from. Pochen at that time was an acronym for "to brag or bluff". You should also note that Poker was often called "bluff" after its name was given.

Poker historians tend toward the French "Poque", in terms of how the game was named. Poker first appeared in New Orleans in 1939. The fact that Poque, a French version of Poque, was popularly played in this area lends credibility to the "Poque” origin. However, it is possible that this is the case.
