Sports betting strategy: How to hedge and middle your bets

Sports betting strategy: How can you hedge or middle your bets

Both professional and recreational gamblers are familiar with the terms "hedging" or "middling". We will discuss these strategies and their use below.

A hedge is when a bettor bets the opposite side of a wager in order reduce their risk or guarantee a profit. Future bets love hedges due to its high payouts as well as multi-way action.

The Middling method is a combination of hedging and maximizing payouts. A middle is when a player takes on both sides of a game, at different lines, in the hopes of winning both.

You will need to use this strategy in either in-game or on the opposing side of your original wager.

When is it best to hedge?

Hedging is for me more of a conversation. The willingness of a bettor to hedge often depends on his bankroll or comfort level with the outcome.

Don't be afraid to let your original wager go if you don't feel like playing or have little stake in the outcome.

Let me tell you how to hedge. Let's first assume you have $100 bet on the Baltimore Ravens (+1440) to win Super Bowl. They dominate the regular season, and they advance to the big game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A $100 original wager on the Ravens (+1400) winning the Super Bowl has a $1.400 pending profit. In this scenario, the Buccaneers are the favorite -130 on money line. You can hedge by placing at least $130 on Bucs (-130) to give yourself at least a "freeroll".

Depending on your emotions, you might consider betting $650 on the Bucs (+130) money line to win Super Bowl. You will get a $500 winnings if Tampa wins and $800 if Baltimore wins.

This is more of a personal problem than a strategy that works for everyone.

Middling opportunities

The best time to start middle is in-game or before the second halves of a game that you are already playing.

Perhaps you like the Tennessee Titans (+4.5) and would rather take Tennessee plus points before kickoff.

Let's suppose the Titans get a few breaks in the first half, and lead 21-7 at halftime. Baltimore, however, is ahead by 6 points. This would give your team an 18-point advantage in the middle.

With the Titans (+4.5), already in your pockets, you can bet Baltimore -6 for halftime to win both the Titans and Tennessee losses.

You can use a middle to maximize profit or as a hedge depending on how it is used. It can be used in any way you like, but it will definitely improve your bankroll.
